April 20, 2020 It’s Day 2 of National Volunteer Week! CHI is very grateful to have such amazing people who have traveled to Haiti, often more than once, for a medical or surgical clinic. Each day this week we will feature one of our dedicated volunteers. Shana has been with CHI for 3 years on two surgical trips and was signed up for one that got canceled. She is a highly-skilled RN with such a loving heart and compassion. She helps out wherever needed and is a pleasure to work around.
One of the best things about Shana is the way she always goes the extra mile. In the fall of 2019, Shana volunteered, along with her husband Greg, to host a young Haitian woman coming to the U.S. for surgery to remove a very large lower-back mass. Shana offered to house and care for Angeline before and after surgery. Sadly, the mass turned out to be malignant and the cancer had spread throughout her body. Shana spent countless hours with this young, frightened, dying woman, talking to her, praying with her, facilitating phone calls with her family back in Haiti, and comforting her during Angeline’s dying days. Her gentleness and compassion were limitless. Today we honor Shana for her work with CHI and more importantly, for her work as an RN who is passionate about people. We’re so thankful to have her as a CHI Alumni and continued supporter of our work in Haiti!
